The husband of a BNP parliamentary candidate has been charged with producing an illegal drug.
Clifford Baddeley, aged 49, of Holehouse Road, Abbey Hulton, was arrested last month on suspicion of possessing cannabis and had been on police bail.
Officers had also searched the home he shares with his wife Melanie, who is standing as the BNP’s candidate in the Stoke-on-Trent North constituency, and is also a serving city councillor.
Mr Baddeley had been a member of the far-right party, but quit last week after leader Nick Griffin was forced to explain his conduct at the BNP’s election manifesto launch in Stoke.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said yesterday: “A man has now been charged with producing a controlled Class B drug and bailed to appear before North Staffordshire magistrates on May 14.”
